"[C]hildren who attend well-planned, high-quality early childhood programs in which curriculum
aims are specified and integrated across domains tend to learn more and are better prepared to
master the complex demands of formal schooling... Young children who are living in
circumstances that place them at greater risk of school failure... are much more likely to succeed
in school if they attend well-planned, high-quality early childhood programs."
— from Eager to Learn (2001), National Research Council, Washington, D.C.

"Because research has identified content that is appropriate and important for inclusion in early
childhood programs, content standards should be developed. The content standards should
ensure that children have access to rich and varied opportunities to learn in areas that are now
omitted from many curricula — such as phonological awareness, number concepts, methods of
scientific investigation, cultural knowledge, and language."

—from Eager to Learn, National Research Council, Washington, D.C., 2001
